“Just Keep Swimming”

— Dory 🐠

It all started when I was just a baby and my mom had put us both in swim lessons. She was afraid of the water so it was imperative that I learned to be a good swimmer at all costs. I took to the water like a fish and from there I was hooked! I continued swim lessons until the age of six, not because I didn’t want to go anymore but because I was ready for the big leagues. I jumped right into Lakewood Rec swimming, just about the same time my little sister was starting up her own lessons. I really enjoyed the feelings of being in the water and the competition that came along with it. I continued my journey even into high school where I immediately joined the team! Naturally being on the swim team the first summer job you’ll have is becoming a lifeguard. It was the best decision I had made for myself since starting swimming. I have so many good memories at Beck’s Pool aka Madison Pool in Lakewood. Being a competitive swimmer and a lifeguard, they have you instruct swim lessons for the city. I had finally come full circle in the life of swimming and began to instruct children at the ripe age of sixteen. I LOVED IT.

I never knew how deep my passion for swimming ran until I started working with those who don’t know anything about it. I also believe deeply in water safety. The earth is 60-80% water And yet over half the population that resides on it have a fear of the water or can’t swim. I made it my mission to make sure even my little sister knew how to be safe in the water. Unfortunately about a year and a half into my lifeguarding career I had to preform a life saving save on a 12 year old boy. He was at the bottom of the six foot pool when I noticed him. Before he had drifted down he was having fun jumping in and flipping around. He got tired and swallowed a lot of water and he wasn’t a good swimmer to begin with. I found that out later. When I was able to bring him back to the deck, I had performed CPR. Bringing him back to life. Most people experiencing an event like that would’ve turned them away. Not me, the passion only grew and later that year I was head lifeguard. I also met with the boys family, the mayor, chief of fire and police to receive a City Resolution that will be in the history of Lakewood forever. I am beyond proud I was there for him and that my mom made the smartest decision without even knowing what she was putting in motion to have me learn to swim.

If I were asked what my coaching style is, I would say it’s an ever improving mixture of having fun and learning the importance of why we learn to swim the way we do. I have been known for working well with children who experience anxiety over swimming. As well as those who may have extra energy and be too brave for their own good. I like to say I know when the right time is to push and when it’s time to take it a little slower. I also am able to touch upon my competitive swim knowledge and apply it to all the medals classes available.

I truly enjoy what I do. I’ve tried other professions, retail, construction, spa/resorts, even cleaning. Yet nothing ever gives me the feeling I get when I’m in the water. It will always call to me and I’m more than happy that it brought me here to Liquid Lifestyles. Where I hope to continue to grow and share my passion for swimming.

My hope is that I am able to inspire all new & improving swimmers to love swimming as much as I do!
