As a daycare worker for the Cleveland Clinic I was responsible for ensuring the safety of the kids and entertaining them with varies activities, including daily swimming lessons.

“As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart.”

- Proverbs 27:19

Hi there! My name is Madeline Bartley and I joined the Liquid Lifestyles team of coaches in June of 2016. I am originally from Forest Grove - a small town near Portland, Oregon - where I started swimming at a very young age. I swam competitively on the local swim team for 6 years before heading off to a small school in Missouri called Cottey College. After I moved back to Oregon, I realized that I loved helping people learn how to swim and feel comfortable in the water, so I decided to pursue coaching on a more professional level. I really enjoyed my time working at the local aquatic center as a swim lesson instructor, assistant Swim Club coach, and assistant High School coach.

When my husband and I decided to move across the country to Cleveland I was excited to be able to continue doing what I love doing most with Liquid Lifestyles. Liquid Lifestyles has such a great vision for teaching even the most novice of swimmers how to swim smarter and more efficiently. I am proud to work with all of the other coaches here who share that vision. Helping people learn how to swim or just improve their swimming and also develop a better relationship to the water is something I love doing; I am so blessed to have this as my job!

My hobbies include: Hiking, cooking, watching movies, taking pictures, swimming (of course), crocheting, painting, singing, and cuddling with my dog.

  • For the past year I have volunteered for an animal rescue that specializes in cats, and have 3 kitty babies of my own.

  • I often watch shows in different languages and sometimes even pick up a few new words.

  • Speaking of different languages, my phone, computer, and t.v. subtitles are all always in Spanish.

  • My fireplace burns 24/7 once the weather drops below 50 degrees, I hate being cold!

  • I’ve been practicing yoga for about 4 years, but also enjoy lifting weights, and of course, swimming!

“Weebles wobble but they don't fall down.” - Hasbro

I began my swimming journey in the early 2000’s by taking swim lessons at my community pool, and in 2008, I joined my first competitive summer recreation swim team. From 2009 - 2013, I swam competitively for North Olmsted High School.  During that time, I was also a swimming instructor for my local pool. I graduated from John Carroll University in May 2017 with a degree majored in Classical Languages and minored in Spanish.

After teaching from 2009-2016, I was lucky enough to be hired on as a coach for Liquid Lifestyles. Liquid Lifestyles’ lessons are unlike any lessons I have ever taught before. The program is absolutely amazing, and the children I coach quickly become proficient in their swimming skills. My expertise with Baby Bubbles 1 and 2, as well as Liquid Bubbles 1, 2, and 3 curricula makes it simple for me to see the importance of each skill. My classes are filled with fun and energy to encourage children to be comfortable and enjoy their time in the water!

My mission is to help children grow in confidence for both swimming and everyday life. I love encouraging swimmers to challenge themselves and believe in their own capabilities. The progression of an anxious beginner is one of my favorite things to witness. To see a child who might have spent the first two lessons crying come to the third lesson with a smile on his or her face and an eagerness to swim is thrilling!

If you are interested in lessons fully in Spanish, or lessons that incorporate learning Spanish, let me know! I love combining my passion for languages with my passion for coaching.

Coach Leah Bencivengo is THE ABSOLUTE BEST COACH EVER. She is the sole reason we kept coming back. She is amazing with our daughter, and we can’t say enough good things about her.

Great engagement, made my baby (and me!) feel comfortable. Leah is the best! Raegan just loves seeing Leah! I caught her singing “hello Leah” in her crib this morning 😁😍
— Ashley V.
On a side note, we are on vacation this week and Olivia is jumping in the pool, turning and swimming to the wall completely independently! Literally everyone was coming up to us on vacation and commenting about how amazing it was that she was doing so well in the water and so young! It is absolutely amazing and a truly all because of the lessons with Liquid Lifestyles! I can’t wait for you to see her at her next lesson! She’s even swimming, taking a breath, and then swimming further if she is too far from the wall still! It’s so amazing!!!! Thank you!!!

“The time that you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.”

- Bertrand Russel

It was back in 2006 when my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at our local recreation center. They did not realize how big of an impact it would have on me. A couple of years after taking swim lessons, I started swimming competitively for the recreation center’s summer swim team. My junior year of high school, I applied to teach lessons at the same place where I took them myself, and that same year, I received my lifeguard certification and started lifeguarding.

During my time teaching swim lessons, I realized how rewarding it is to help the kiddos learn to swim or improve their skills. Swimming is one of the most important skills anyone can learn and to have the opportunity to provide people with the help they need to obtain that skill is incredible! I am so lucky to be able to continue instructing with some of the best coaches around and improve my instructing at Liquid Lifestyles.

5 FUN FACTS ABOUT ME

  • My wife and I were born 36 hours apart in the same hospital. We didn’t officially meet until we were sixteen. We married in 1992.

  • Before joining Liquid Lifestyles as a partner, I was a serial entrepreneur who failed miserably on my first attempt: an outdoor adventure and kayak retailer. From the ashes of that misadventure, I built a successful sports sales and marketing agency. After selling that company, I launched a sports nutrition e-commerce business, ran it for 8 years and sold it upon acquiring a sports nutrition manufacturer out of Canada.

  • My garage looks like a bike shop. I have six bikes: two road bikes, a time-trial bike, a cyclocross bike, a fat tire bike, and a tandem. My son has 4 bikes and my wife has 2. The optimum number of bikes to own is N+1 with “n” being the number of bikes you currently own. Next on my shopping list is a mountain bike.

  • I am an avid photographer and began my journey working in a camera store in college. I started with film based SLRs and transitioned to digital in 2001, eventually migrating to DSLRs. I own just about as many cameras, lenses and drones as I do bicycles. All of the artwork in our home is my photography and I took many of the images on Liquid Lifestyles’ website and social media.

  • I have ridden several self supported bike tours: Venice, Italy to Innsbruck, Austria (2001), Maryland to Tennessee along Skyline Drive & The Blue Ridge Parkway (2009) and rode around Lake Erie (2010). My son and I are planning on riding our Fat Bikes from Calgary to Denver along the Continental Divide Trail when he graduates from Ohio Wesleyan University in May 2019.

FAVORITE QUOTES

When I did my first triathlon in 1991 I, like so many others, struggled to get through the swim. Back then my training plan was to just go to the pool and swim yards. The more the better and the harder the better, or so I thought. After several years of this strategy, I was experiencing a modest level of success relative to how I started. When I was introduced to Liquid Lifestyles through a triathlon swim group, circa 2004, I was hesitant. I reluctantly did the prescribed drills during practice and questioned the concepts and new focal points. I actually felt like I was going slower in the water until we started timing our sets. It was only then that I learned I was actually going faster with less effort! I was hooked. I trained with Liquid Lifestyles for a number of years with an entirely new mindset – one that was focused, critical and embraced the concepts that once seemed so counter-intuitive. My personal swimming experience has been incredibly rewarding since then and I’m excited to share the process of smart training and smart swimming with others. Since 2009 I’ve had the rewarding experience to assist at weekend workshops, open water clinics and offering private lessons to recreational swimmers, triathletes and beginners of all backgrounds and ability levels.

I have competed in over 70 triathlons (and counting) - everything from sprint distance to 140.6 full distance triathlons. Whether you are just getting started or stepping up to your first Half or Full Ironman I can help you reach your swimming goals and PR in any distance.

I shaved 15-20 seconds off my typical 100 yard time using “drive” and “flicking gum off my foot!” So awesome to be back in the pool with you! You always manage to put the pieces of the puzzle together in a manner that I can understand! Thank you!!

FAVORITE QUOTE

“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

- Theologian Frederick Buechner

I started my swimming career when my mom brought me to our neighborhood pool day after day in the summer. I started swim lessons at that same pool, and would love to watch the “cool big kids” get in the water for swim team practice after I finished my lessons. Pretty soon, I had joined the team myself, and fell in love with the sport of swimming even though that small recreation team lost every single meet except for one my first season. Although I was so excited to swim for a second summer, an unfortunate fall down a driveway on a scooter left me with two broken fingers and kept me out of the water for most of the summer…so I discovered winter swimming, and never looked back. As I grew up, I got to compete for my YMCA, USA club teams, my high school, and eventually for Grove City College’s NCAA Division 3 swimming and diving program. I competed in breaststroke, individual medley, and freestyle events, and loved trying new events and ways of training. As I kept swimming, season after season, my love for the sport and the new challenging levels of training I experienced grew, and I dreamed of working with young swimmers who loved the sport like I did. As soon as I was old enough, I received my lifeguarding certification so I could teach swim lessons at my local pool. I loved working with athletes in a competitive setting as well, so after my freshman year of college I sought out my first coaching job, and found a place working with swimmers on the same recreational team that gave me my start.

Swimming taught me much more than just how to swim butterfly, how to pace a 400 IM, and to do a proper racing start off the blocks. Swimming taught me to overcome my fears of things like learning to dive or swimming a race again after it had gone badly. Swimming taught me how to keep working hard even when my goals seemed out of reach, and it taught me how to do hard things and persevere. It gave me an outlet to relieve stress from homework and an otherwise busy schedule, and it let me learn new skills and reach new limits that I never thought were possible. The highs and lows of my swimming career showed me that there is way more to sports than just winning a game or meet or race, and I am very passionate about sharing the amazing gift of swimming with others. I want others to be able to learn the same things I have about swimming, and see how the sport can help them to grow and learn new things about themselves. I love that I can share the love of the sport with anyone, at any level, and I find so much joy in coaching others to love the sport of swimming and grow through the challenges and victories it presents.

FAVORITE QUOTE

The people who get things done, who lead, who grow and make an impact… those people have goals”- Seth Godin

I grew up on a farm in rural Kentucky, where my love for swimming began. I had a pool in my backyard and some of my best memories of my childhood come from that very pool. I lived in a lake town, so I was bound to love the water! As soon as I could, I was enrolled into the summer swim league at our city pool. Fast forward from 4-year-old Molly, and I had stuck with swimming through camps, high school, lifeguarding, and private lessons. Throughout that time, I met some of my lifelong friends and a Coach who helped mold me into who I am today. Swimming competitively for 14 years instilled in me valuable lifelong skills that have been implemented into other aspects of my life, both in and out of the water. I graduated from The University of Kentucky in May of 2018 with a BA in Kinesiology, exercise science. I knew I wanted to pursue something further, it was after my first sport psychology course at UK that I knew I was fascinated with the mental aspect of sport. Liquid Lifestyles stands for the things I appreciate in the world of swimming because it aligns with my "why," which is to help others, especially in this setting! I know that coaching in a place that has a passion for swimming and helping others reach their goals can will also help me grow as a professional. I have a passion for serving others and sport and performance psychology is a way I can do that in a sport setting. I am one quarter away from finishing my masters and starting the doctoral coursework. I am beyond excited to hopefully share some of the things I am learning with those at Liquid Lifestyles.

Swimming has always been a huge part of my life and being a coach is the perfect way to continue staying involved in this beautiful sport. I've loved water ever since I can remember. I was a synchronized swimmer for 7 years before starting competitive swimming in high school. Swimming in high school turned into swimming in college at Wright State University. During college I taught swim lessons both at school and during the summers. After graduating I started coaching a YMCA team in Dayton. When I moved back to Cleveland I began coaching for a USA club team, and then eventually took an assistant coaching position for Magnificat High School and Liquid Lifestyles. Its the perfect mix of clients for me and I truly enjoy every lesson and practice!

* Sending quotes to my kids, their friends and past swimmers I coached is one of my favorite things to do, especially when it is championship season for any sport they participate in...

I love swimming. I love everything about it...teaching it to beginners, coaching it, watching it, and especially cheering for my three daughters, that all do it competitively, and cheering for all the great swimmers I've had an opportunity to work with and see at meets throughout the year.  Swimming has always been connected to the best friendships I've had.  Lifelong friendships that started when I started swimming at age 6, friendships with former swimmers I've coached, and adult friendships that started sitting at a pool watching our kids compete.  I truly love teaching kids to swim and feel blessed I get to do what I love everyday!

Thank you, Joy!

"Do or do not, there is no try." - Master Yoda

During my formative years, I tried many a different sport, all with similarly hilarious results. In baseball I had a 100% on base percentage, but that was because I got hit with the ball every time. In soccer, I played midfield, where the ball would always find its way toward my head. Similarly, in basketball, the ball would hit my nose more often than not. I sprained my ankle constantly in track, and most of my options were exhausted by 6th grade.

It was after all of this when my mom, who with my aunt broke several records in their home pool at Moon High School, suggested that I could try out swimming, as there was no possible way I could injure myself there. That, and I had freakishly long arms and legs, with large hands and feet… perfect for natural fins. She was right, for a time, but that’s another story. It took a while for me to get the hang of it, about 3 years before I could swim decently due to subpar coaching. Once I found a coach that knew what I needed and could articulate it, I started to blossom as a swimmer, and, in two short years, I went from barely being able to finish a 200, to making the 200 IM my main race.

I then went to college at Saint Vincent College to further my swimming ability, where I found that I had transformed into a distance swimmer. During the two years I attended college there, I became proficient in the 400 IM and the 1600 Free. After I transferred to Kent Stark, I focused more on my schooling, but then started to coach at the Shaw JCC, where I greatly enjoyed seeing the improvement that my swimmers had while under my tutelage. I also received my Water Safety instructor certification from the Red Cross during this time, which helped grow my teaching instincts immensely.

It’s the joy of a new swimming discovery that I want to see in everyone I meet, and I yearn to ensure that everyone has a much easier time getting into swimming than I did. I joined Liquid Lifestyles because I believe that their commitment to you, the learner, is far above what I have seen elsewhere, and I want to bring my unique approach to help improve any facet of your swimming that you may need.

Aquatics have been a fixture in my life for almost my entire existence.  I excelled as an “8 and under” on my local summer swim team and couldn’t get enough.  As a result, I joined the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins and began my adventure as a year round swimmer.  The next step was joining my high school swim team where I set multiple school records, become the team captain and Most Valuable Swimmer.

With that experience under my belt, I earned a spot on the John Carroll University swim team, where I earned high point awards, All-Conference recognition, swimmer of the week, a school record and, my most coveted honor, team captain.

Once I graduated from college, I knew that couldn’t be the end of my swimming career.  This was a lifelong sport, after-all!  That is where I got my first taste of USA Masters Swimming while in Graduate School.  As a member of the Kentucky Wildcats Masters Team, I earned 3-National Championships and multiple meet records.

Throughout every team and experience, I made friendships that will last of lifetime and I feel as though this is the most amazing aspect of the sport of swimming. I want others to get to experience this type of connection and passion in their lives. I credit much of my success in school to swimming since it taught me discipline and time management skills.

My most recent endeavor has been the sport of triathlon.  Having a swimming background has put me at a major advantage over most triathletes who are scared to death of the water.  With 3 IRONMAN finishes and 4 X 70.3 finishes, I have a passion for open water swimming and teaching athletes how to fine tune their techniques in open water environments.

Due to the fact that I fell in love with swimming, I naturally decided that lifeguarding would be a solid fit. I become a lifeguard and lessons instructor and eventually added coaching to my resume. I started coaching summer league and then gradually added high school, USS and Masters Teams to my coaching collection. In addition, I was an Aquatics Graduate Assistant at the University of Kentucky which led to further certifications in the realm of Aquatics. I was a certified LGI (Lifeguard Instructor), Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and also taught and certified students in CPR/First Aid and AED.

Hello! My name is Summer Stearns, I joined the Liquid Lifestyles crew in March of 2017 and I love it! Before I became a professional swim instructor I was once a kid learning to swim myself! In my early years I lived in Deerfield Beach of South Florida. My family and I lived just a fifteen minute bike ride from the beach and were around pools ALL THE TIME. At about 9 years old I joined my school's swim team because of my love for swimming. Turns out my dislike for competition at the time outweighed my love of swimming, so after one season I stuck to recreational swimming and splashing.

When I was about 10 years old my mom and dad decided they wanted to get out of the heat and move to North East Ohio. North Olmsted to be exact and that is where I spent my middle school and high school years. My sophomore year however, my mom decided I needed to get a job. As reluctant as I was, I took the American Red Cross Life guarding class at my local YMCA and received my certification. From there, I applied at my local recreation center and began life guarding at age 15. About a month in, my boss asked me if I was interested in teaching swim lessons as well. I said, "Yeah! That's got to be more interesting than sitting in a chair all day!" Thus my love for teaching swim lessons was created.

I taught lessons for 5 years at my local recreation center and decided I needed a change, so I applied for Liquid Lifestyles. I saw Liquid's Coaches working with kids while life guarding and was so impressed I needed to know more. Now working with the team, I know I was right to be impressed. These coaches are professional, experienced and completely passionate about helping children and adults learn one of life's most important skills, swimming.  It is this fiercely important feeling about water safety skills that connected me to the rest of the team, and I hope to share that connection with you!

Thank you for your help! We had tried for several years to get Blake to learn to swim using both group and private lessons at our local community pool, without success. By word of mouth, we had heard of Liquid Lifestyles and their successful swimming programs. We convinced him to try one more time to try to learn to swim. This past summer was a complete turnaround, with him now having both the confidence and the desire to want to swim! We attribute this to your program and especially Coach Summer’s work with him. Blake developed both confidence and trust in Coach Summer and what she would ask of him to do. Again, thank you and Coach Summer!

My son has been in your swim program for a year now and we love it! I taught swimming lessons for quite a few years and now I teach third grade, so I know all that goes into teaching young kids. Coach Summer is knowledgeable, stern without being mean, and she has fun with the kids while teaching them. For this reason I go out of my way to set up my Carter with Summer.
